How-to

How paying and tipping usually work for guides and drivers

Updated 2026-10-23

Travelers ask two questions that sound the same and are not: how do I pay, and do I tip? On this site the answer starts in the WhatsApp thread with the coordinator, not on a published tip chart. China On Call does not list prices on how-to pages, does not invent a fixed tip percentage, and does not publish a cash table for guides or drivers.

This note explains what to ask, what a quote often covers, and how tipping culture can differ from what you may know from other countries — without naming amounts. Role split first if you are still choosing who to book: choose a guide or interpreter. Car method: book a private car in China. Brief shape: brief a guide on WhatsApp. Service starts: tour guide, private car.

The driver is not the guide, and payment follows the role

A private car includes a driver matched to the meet and the route. A tour guide covers commentary and pacing at sites. An interpreter covers meeting language. Paying one does not automatically pay the other. If the same day uses a car and a guide, the quote should say which hours and which people are covered. Ask until that line is clear.

Do not hand cash to whoever is in the front seat and assume the guide’s day is settled. Confirm in the same WhatsApp thread who invoices what.

What a quote usually needs to spell out

Before you travel, ask the coordinator to state, in plain lines:

  • Which service days and hours are included (guide, driver, interpreter, or mixed).
  • Whether vehicle costs for those hours are inside the same quote or separate.
  • Whether meals for the guide or driver during long days are included, excluded, or handled another way.
  • Whether scenic tickets, cable cars, or attraction fees are included. On this site they are usually not. You buy or hold them yourself unless the thread says otherwise.
  • How and when payment is collected: deposit, balance, cash on the day, or transfer — whatever the coordinator confirms for your booking.
  • Whether any gratuity is already built into the quote, or whether tips are optional and separate.

If a line is missing, ask before the day starts. The site will not show a “from” price to fill the gap.

Tipping culture: ask, do not copy a foreign rule

In many Chinese service contexts, a separate tip is less automatic than in some Western restaurant or tour cultures. Practices also vary by city, by private arrangement, and by whether the guest’s home culture tips heavily. None of that is a reason to invent a percentage on this page.

Useful habits instead:

  • Read the quote. If it already includes service, do not double-pay because a guidebook named a percentage.
  • If you want to leave something extra for excellent help, ask the coordinator on WhatsApp whether that is appropriate for this booking and how to do it cleanly: to whom, when, and cash or another method they confirm.
  • Do not pressure a guide or driver in front of a group to name a tip figure. Use the coordinator thread.
  • Do not assume the driver and the guide share one envelope unless the coordinator said they should.

There is no tip table on China On Call how-to pages. Any figure you see on a third-party blog is not our rate card.

Cash, transfer, and day-of payment

Payment methods that work for you at home may not be the ones the coordinator confirms for a mainland day. Before arrival, ask:

  • Whether a deposit is due in the thread and how it is paid.
  • What remains for the balance, and whether that is before the day, on the day, or after.
  • Whether cash in RMB is expected for any part, and who holds it — a coordinator instruction, or handing money on site.
  • Whether international cards or foreign wallets are accepted for your booking. Do not assume. Ask.

Do not invent a workaround, for example paying a random personal account someone texts you outside the China On Call thread. Stay in the same WhatsApp conversation with the coordinator.

What to put in the first WhatsApp message

You can ask payment and tipping questions in the same brief that books the day. Short lines are fine.

  • City and dates.
  • Service: guide, private car, interpreter, or mixed, with hours for each.
  • Party size and working language.
  • Shape of the day: sites, meeting, airport meet, or another shape.
  • What does the quote include? Hours, vehicle, meals, tickets.
  • How do we pay, and is any gratuity already included?
  • If we want to tip, what method do you recommend for this booking?

General brief fields: brief a guide on WhatsApp. Choosing guide vs interpreter: choose a guide or interpreter.

Sample brief

Rewrite freely; keep the fields.

Hello China On Call — guide + private car, and a payment question.

City: Xi'an
Dates: 2026-11-20
Day shape: Terracotta morning + city drop · English guide + car
Party: 2 adults
Language: English

Please quote with lines for: guide hours, car hours, what is excluded (tickets?).
Also: how we pay deposit/balance; is gratuity included or optional?
If an optional tip is customary for this booking, how should we handle it on WhatsApp?

That is enough to start. You do not need amounts in the first message. The coordinator answers with the quote structure.

What you get back

A coordinator replies on WhatsApp with who covers which hours and a quote. Confirm inclusions and payment steps in that thread before the day. The site will not show a starting price or a tip chart. If you prefer WeChat, scan the code on the contact page or in the footer. WhatsApp is still the thread we answer.

Questions

Is tipping required?

Not as a fixed rule on this page. Ask whether any gratuity is already in the quote, and whether an optional extra is appropriate for your booking.

Can you tell me a standard tip percentage?

No. We do not publish tip percentages or cash tables. Ask the coordinator for this booking.

Are attraction tickets in the guide price?

Usually not, unless the thread says they are. Say what tickets you already hold.

Do I pay the driver and the guide separately?

Often the quote groups what China On Call is matching. Sometimes the lines are separate. Ask until the quote says who is covered.

What if someone on site asks for cash outside the plan?

Pause and message the coordinator in the same WhatsApp thread before you pay anything unexpected.

Also on this site

On WhatsApp, book the guide, car, or interpreter with city, dates, party, and language — then ask plainly what the quote includes, how to pay, and whether tipping is included or optional for this booking. A coordinator replies in the same chat. Prefer WeChat on some phones — the same questions apply. There is no tip chart on the site.
