Changsha Travel Guide: Arriving, Paying and Getting Around
Updated 2026-10-24
Changsha is the capital of Hunan province, on the Xiang River. Visitors come for Yuelu Mountain and Yuelu Academy, Orange Isle, the Hunan Museum with the Mawangdui collection, the old streets around Pozi Street and Taiping Street, and Hunan food. It is also a common starting point for trips to Zhangjiajie, Fenghuang and Shaoshan.
This guide covers arrival, how long to stay, the payment and app setup visitors run into, and when a private car · guide · interpreter is worth arranging. If you already know your dates, go straight to our Changsha service page.
Getting from the airport to the city
Changsha Huanghua International Airport (CSX)
CSX is east of the city. Options into town:
- Metro Line 6: starts in the basement of the airport terminals. Change to Line 2 at Renmin East Road (Renmin Donglu) to reach the Wuyi Square area in the center. Allow around 50 minutes.
- Maglev: runs between the airport and Changsha South Railway Station. Use it if you are connecting to a high-speed train; for the city center, the metro is more direct.
- Airport buses: airport buses run to the main rail stations; check current routes and last departures. Useful after the metro stops for the night.
- Taxi: use the official queue. Have your hotel address in Chinese characters.
- Pre-arranged car: a driver meets you at arrivals. The simplest option if you land late, have luggage, or travel with children or older relatives.
Check the last metro and maglev times for your arrival day — late flights may miss them.
Payment note: don't count on tapping a foreign bank card at Changsha metro gates. An Alipay or WeChat Pay transit QR code works, or buy a single-journey ticket at a machine or counter.
Arriving by high-speed rail
- Changsha South (Changshanan): the main high-speed station, on the Beijing–Guangzhou line and others. Metro Line 2 and Line 4 connect it to the city; the maglev links it to the airport.
- Changsha Railway Station: central, east of Wuyi Square, mainly conventional trains. Connected to the metro.
- Other stations serve some routes. Check the exact station name on your ticket.
Changsha South is large and busy. If a driver is meeting you, agree on the exit and a meeting point beforehand.
How many days to plan
- 1–2 days: Hunan Museum, Orange Isle, Yuelu Mountain and Yuelu Academy, an evening on Pozi Street or Taiping Street.
- 3 days: adds a day trip to Shaoshan (Mao Zedong's birthplace) or the old town of Tongguan or Jingang, and a slower pace in the city.
- 4+ days: Changsha combined with Zhangjiajie and/or Fenghuang. Zhangjiajie can be reached by high-speed rail or by road; many visitors spend two or three days there.
The Hunan Museum often requires advance reservation and can be fully booked on weekends and holidays, so plan that day around your booking.
Payments and apps: what visitors run into
Alipay and WeChat Pay. Both let you link foreign cards (Visa, Mastercard and others) and pay by scanning QR codes. In Changsha, outside large hotels and malls, QR payment is the norm, so set this up before you fly and do a small test payment. Larger transactions may have limits or extra verification for foreign cards.
Cards and cash. Foreign card acceptance is growing but is less common than in Beijing or Shanghai, especially at street food stalls and small shops. Carry some cash in yuan as a fallback.
Ride-hailing. DiDi works for visitors, including as a mini-program inside Alipay. Drivers may call or message in Chinese to confirm the pickup point.
Maps. Google Maps often has gaps and outdated data in China. Amap (Gaode) or Apple Maps work better. Save your hotel name and address in Chinese.
Internet access. Many international services are blocked. Check your roaming plan or eSIM before you go.
Tickets and real-name booking. Train tickets and many museums and sights require real-name booking with your passport number. Bring the passport you booked with.
About tickets: you book and hold your own train and sight tickets. We can tell you what to book and when, but the tickets are in your name.
Language. English is less widely spoken in Changsha than in Beijing or Shanghai, and the local dialect differs from standard Mandarin. Outside hotels, expect to lean on a translation app; for meetings and appointments, an interpreter helps.
When a private car · guide · interpreter helps
These are three different roles. Many visitors only need one.
A private car with driver helps when:
- you are doing day trips to Shaoshan, the old towns, or driving on to Zhangjiajie or Fenghuang;
- you have luggage, children, older relatives or limited mobility;
- you want to link Yuelu Mountain, the museum and the riverfront in one day without transfers.
A driver drives. A driver is not a guide and usually will not walk the sights with you or explain them.
A guide helps when:
- you want the Mawangdui collection, Yuelu Academy or local history explained;
- you want help with the order of the visit, reservations and timing;
- you want food recommendations and help ordering in places without picture menus.
An interpreter helps when:
- you have business meetings, factory visits or supplier visits around Changsha;
- you need help at a hospital, bank or with paperwork;
- you are visiting family or partners who do not share a language with you.
An interpreter works in your language, which may not be English. Tell us your working language when you write.
You can combine these or book just one. See our guides on booking a private car in China and how to choose between a guide and an interpreter.
A sample way to split the days
- Day 1: arrive, transfer to the hotel, evening at Pozi Street and Taiping Street.
- Day 2: Hunan Museum in the morning (reserved slot), Orange Isle in the afternoon, Yuelu Mountain and Yuelu Academy late afternoon.
- Day 3: day trip to Shaoshan by car, or continue toward Zhangjiajie.
Questions
How do I get from Changsha airport to the city center?
Take Metro Line 6 from the airport and change to Line 2 at Renmin East Road (Renmin Donglu), or take a taxi or pre-arranged car. The maglev goes to Changsha South Railway Station, not the center.
Can I tap my foreign card on the Changsha metro?
Don't count on it. Use an Alipay or WeChat Pay transit QR code, or buy a ticket at the machine or counter.
Is Changsha a good base for Zhangjiajie?
Many travelers combine them. Zhangjiajie is reachable by high-speed rail or by road. Tell us your dates and we can help you plan the route.
Is a driver the same as a guide?
No. A driver handles the car and route; a guide walks the sights with you and explains them. Book one or both.
Who holds the train and museum tickets?
You do. They are booked in your name with your passport. We can advise on what to book and when.
Do your guides and interpreters only work in English?
No. Tell us your working language when you write, and we will tell you what is available in Changsha for your dates.
How do I start?
