How to brief a private car when you travel with kids
Updated 2026-10-23
A family day fails for boring reasons: too many sites, not enough bag space, a meet that assumes everyone walks fast, or a seat need that never appeared in the first message. On this site a private car is a vehicle and a driver matched to the city, the dates, the party, and the luggage. It is not a self-drive rental, and it is not a guide. China On Call does not list a starting rate, does not sell scenic tickets, and does not publish a child-seat law lecture on this page.
What works instead: put ages, headcount, bags, and any seat or stroller needs into the WhatsApp brief, then let the coordinator say what can be matched. Wider car method: book a private car in China. Airport-shaped meets: airport private-car pickup. Same-day landing questions: same-day airport transfer. Start a car brief: /en/private-car/.
Driver ≠ guide (families feel the split)
A private car covers the meet and the route. A tour guide covers commentary and pacing at sites. An interpreter covers meeting language. Paying for the car does not automatically give you someone who explains the museum to a seven-year-old.
Ask for a guide as well when you want language at tickets, lunch, or exhibits. Ask for car only when the day is mostly transfers and you will handle the sites yourselves. Role split: choose a guide or interpreter. Brief shape: brief a guide on WhatsApp.
What to write into the brief (so the match is real)
Copy the fields that apply. Short lines are fine.
- City (and second city if the car crosses).
- Dates, including which day is the arrival with luggage.
- Party: adults + children, with ages (not only “family of four”).
- Large bags, strollers, car seats you are bringing, or foldable gear that needs trunk space.
- Seat needs: if you want a child seat or booster arranged, write that into WhatsApp as a requirement for this booking — do not assume every car already has one.
- Pace: nap windows, early bedtime, or “one major stop only.”
- Airport or station meet if relevant: boarding-pass airport code or exact station name, flight/train number, and a phone that works on landing.
- Language at the curb or on site; driver language is not the same as guide language.
- Whether the same car should continue into sightseeing after the hotel drop (often a separate ask).
The hotel room number can wait. Ages and bag count cannot. “Two kids” without ages is harder to match than “ages 3 and 9.”
Seat and stroller needs: put them in WhatsApp
Families ask about child seats. This page will not scare you with a statute list or invent a fine chart. The practical rule on China On Call is simpler: if you need a seat, booster, or extra stroller space, write it into the first WhatsApp message and wait for the coordinator to confirm what can be arranged for those dates.
Also say whether you are bringing your own seat or need one supplied. If you are flying with a seat bag, count it in the luggage line so the trunk plan is honest. If the answer for your dates is “not available,” you still learn that before the curb, not after.
Do not pack the day too full
Kids change the clock. A Great Wall section, a long museum, and a night market on the same arrival day is a common adult plan and a hard family plan. Prefer:
- One major outdoor or museum block, then hotel reset.
- Built-in snack and toilet stops in the brief (“please allow flexible stops”).
- Separating airport meet from full sightseeing when landing is late or jet lag is heavy.
If you want commentary without rushing, ask for a guide and say the day should stay short. Ticket lines and cable cars are usually your purchase unless the thread says otherwise — the page does not sell attraction tickets.
Airport and station days with children
Name the airport code from the boarding pass (PEK vs PKX, PVG vs SHA, CTU vs TFU, or the single field for other cities), flight number, terminal if known, and how many large bags plus strollers. Dual-airport mistakes hurt more when nap time is involved. Full field list: airport private-car pickup. City-shaped notes: Beijing airport transfer, Shanghai airport-to-hotel transfer.
Rail meets need the exact station name, not only the city. Method: train-station private-car pickup.
What to put in the first WhatsApp message
You can book the car (and guide, if needed) in one note.
- City and dates
- Service: private car / guide + car / mixed hours
- Adults + children with ages
- Bags, strollers, own seat or seat request
- Day shape and pace limits (“hotel by 16:00,” “one site only”)
- Airport code + flight number, or exact station, if you want a meet
- Language
- Explicit ask: Can you match a car for this party and seat/stroller note?
Sample brief
Rewrite freely; keep the fields.
Hello China On Call — private car for a family day, please. City: Beijing Dates: 2026-11-22 arrival + 23 city Party: 2 adults + children ages 4 and 8 Bags: 3 large + 1 stroller; we bring our own booster for the younger child Meet: PKX, flight CA1234, hotel area near Guomao Day on 23: one outdoor stop only, early return — English guide + car if available Language: English at sites; driver for the route Please confirm vehicle fit and whether the booster we bring is enough for your match. Quote car (and guide) hours; tickets we buy ourselves.
That is enough to start. You do not need room numbers in the first message.
What you get back
A coordinator replies on WhatsApp with what can be matched for those dates and a quote. Confirm seat, stroller, and pace notes in that thread before you travel. The site will not show a starting price. If you prefer WeChat for chat, scan the code on the contact page or in the footer. WhatsApp is still the thread we answer.
Questions
Do you always provide a child seat?
Not as a blanket promise on this page. Write the need into WhatsApp and wait for confirmation for your dates.
Is the driver a babysitter or guide?
No. Driver covers the route. Ask for a guide if you want site language and pacing help.
Can we do airport pickup and a full wall day the same afternoon?
Sometimes the clock allows it; often families should not. Say landing time and energy limits; the coordinator can help you split windows.
Are attraction tickets included?
Usually not, unless the thread says they are.
What if our bags and stroller need a larger vehicle?
Say counts and gear in the first message so the match is sized honestly.
