How to brief a Shanghai airport-to-hotel transfer

A Shanghai airport transfer fails most often on one missing field: which airport. Guests write “Shanghai pickup” and leave PVG vs SHA, the terminal, and the hotel area blank. Those are different curbs and different drives. A coordinator then guesses — or bounces questions before a quote.

This note is a brief guide for a private-car meet from Shanghai Pudong (PVG) or Shanghai Hongqiao (SHA) to your hotel area. It is not a taxi rank tip and not a self-drive rental. PVG vs SHA — write the code

PVG (Pudong) and SHA (Hongqiao) are different airports and different meets. Wrong airport means a half-day mistake: the road between them is not a short hop, and the driver waits at one curb, not both.

Send the code from the boarding pass of the flight you actually step out of — not the first airport on a multi-leg itinerary — plus the terminal when it is already on your ticket. Hongqiao often shares a hub with high-speed rail; if you are arriving by train instead of air, say rail meet, not “Shanghai airport.”

Hotel near the Bund versus near Hongqiao also changes the drive from the same flight. “Near the Bund” and “Pudong riverside” are different drives from PVG. The room number can wait; the area cannot.

What the meet looks like

The usual meet is after baggage claim, at the arrivals point the airport allows for private cars, with a short sign using the wording you sent. Do not put a personal story on the sign. International arrivals take longer than domestic ones.

If the flight slips, write the new time in the same WhatsApp thread. Do not open a second booking first. An early landing is the same kind of note: the driver is matched to a window, not to a rumor on the arrivals board. If you are rebooked from PVG to SHA (or the reverse), say so before anyone rolls — that is a new curb.

Bags, children, and stacking the rest of the day

Count people and large bags together. A sedan that fits two cabin bags is the wrong shape for a family, a stroller, and three checked cases. Say if anyone needs the front seat or cannot manage a high curb.

A short domestic hop that lands in the morning can sometimes continue as a light city walk. A long-haul night landing plus a full water-town day or a Hangzhou day trip is usually two jobs.
