Private car vs taxi or ride-hail in mainland China
Updated 2026-10-23
Travelers often ask whether they “need a car” or can “just take a taxi.” Those are different tools. A taxi or ride-hail (the category of on-demand apps used in Chinese cities) is strong for a short hop when you already have a phone setup, a payment method that works, and one clear destination. A private car on this site is a vehicle and a driver matched to your brief for a meet, a multi-stop day, or hours of waiting — not a car you hail at the rank.
China On Call does not run a taxi fleet and does not sell ride-hail credits. This page compares when each shape fits, so you send the right brief. It is not a rate card and it does not name drivers. Method for booking a private car: book a private car in China. Airport meet shape: airport private-car pickup. Service start: private car.
What “private car” means here
On this site a private car means a driver stays with you for the agreed window: airport or station meet, hotel drop, then optional stops you named in the brief. The coordinator matches the city, dates, party size, bags, and whether a guide rides along. The driver is not the guide unless we say one person covers both.
A taxi or ride-hail trip usually ends when you get out. If you want the same car to wait while you tour a museum, or to return after a Wall section, that is a private-car shape — not a second hail every time.
When a private car usually earns its place
Airport or station with large bags. After a long-haul landing, a signed meet and a vehicle sized for checked cases is calmer than negotiating trunk space at a busy curb. Dual-airport cities still need the boarding-pass code. Detail: airport private-car pickup. Rail: train-station private-car pickup.
Multi-stop or outer-site days. Great Wall sections outside Beijing, the Terracotta Army outside Xi'an, Guilin–Yangshuo road time, or a day that mixes hotel, lunch, and two sites. You want one brief and one driver who already knows the order of stops.
Waiting built into the day. A factory visit, a fair booth, a half-day meeting, or “stay with us until we finish the park.” Ride-hail is shaped for the trip. A private car is matched to the window.
No working local payment app or SIM yet. Many taxis and ride-hail flows assume a Chinese payment wallet or a setup you may not have on landing day. A private-car meet is arranged before you land. You do not need to open an app at the curb to get the first ride.
Language at the meet. A driver may only manage the curb. If you need commentary, ask for a guide as well: choose a guide or interpreter. The point is not that every taxi driver is silent. It is that a signed meet and a pre-agreed hotel area remove the curb negotiation.
Intercity, or leave you in the next town. Chengdu toward Chongqing by road, Kunming toward a circuit town, or hotel A to hotel B across a long day. Say return or one-way. Multi-city weeks: multi-city private-car brief.
When a taxi or ride-hail is often enough
- One short hop inside a central district, light bags, and a destination already on your map.
- You already have a working phone, map, and payment method that the local taxi or ride-hail category accepts.
- You are not asking anyone to wait for hours or to cover an outer scenic gate the same afternoon.
- You are comfortable reading the curb and the address yourself.
China On Call will not tell you that taxis are unsafe as a category. They are ordinary city transport. The question is whether your day needs a matched window and a meet, or a single on-demand trip.
What to put in the first WhatsApp message
If you decide the private car fits, send the fields that apply. Short lines are fine. General brief shape: brief a guide on WhatsApp.
- City, and a second city if the car crosses.
- Dates, and which day is arrival with luggage.
- Party size, ages of children, large bags, stroller, or wheelchair.
- Airport code or exact station name if you need a meet.
- Hotel area. The room number can wait.
- Shape of the day: transfer only, multi-stop, waiting, or intercity.
- Language at the curb. Guide yes or no, and the working language if commentary matters.
- Whether the car returns or leaves you in the next town.
Sample brief
Rewrite freely; keep the fields.
Hello China On Call — private car (not taxi / ride-hail). City: Beijing Dates: 2026-11-12 arrival + 2026-11-13 Mutianyu day Arrival: PEK · CA123 · land 09:50 China local · 3 large bags Hotel area: Dongcheng Day 2: Mutianyu · car wait at section · return same hotel Party: 3 adults Language: English meet sign; English guide on Wall day please Why private car: bags on day 1; waiting + outer site on day 2
That is enough to start. You do not need a polished itinerary paragraph.
What you get back
A coordinator replies on WhatsApp with the shape of the day and a quote. Nothing is confirmed until you agree in that thread. The site does not show a “from” price and does not list named drivers. If you prefer WeChat, scan the code on the contact page or in the footer. WhatsApp is still the thread we answer.
Questions
Is China On Call a taxi company?
No. We match private cars, and guides or interpreters when asked, to a brief. We do not sell ride-hail rides.
Can I use a taxi for the airport and a private car for sightseeing?
Yes. Many travelers do. Say which days are which. Airport-only: airport private-car pickup.
Will the private-car driver speak my language?
Often only enough for the meet and the route. Ask for a guide if you want sites explained.
Do you compare prices with ride-hail apps on this page?
No. There is no price card here. Send the brief. The quote comes in WhatsApp for the window you asked for.
Are the driver and the guide the same person?
Only if we say so. By default the driver is not the guide. Role split: choose a guide or interpreter.

On WhatsApp, say whether you need a private-car window (meet, multi-stop, waiting, intercity) rather than a single taxi hop. Send city, dates, party size, bags, airport code or exact station if relevant, hotel area, and guide yes or no. A coordinator replies with the shape of the day and a quote. Prefer WeChat on some phones — the same fields apply.
